Art as Outreach
It may not be as exotic a mission field as Kenya, but the campus of St. Philip UMC in West Cobb has become both a challenging and a rewarding opportunity to witness the Lord at work. One example of this is the 54-foot mural that’s being painted in the children’s area on the lower level of the main building.
So far, roughly two dozen volunteers, young and old, with varying degrees of artistic skills, have literally made their mark by filling in the background colors of an enormous piece of art that has been designed as an elaborate paint-by-numbers project.
But this mural is more than simply a welcome splash of color. It is a great way for us to reach out to the St. Philip community and say we want you to be involved in what we’re doing here. Our hope is that being part of this mural project will give folks a sense of ownership—that this really is their church.
The project is being coordinated by artist Linda Cole, who last year completed a series of murals throughout the nursery and preschool area at Mt. Bethel. The St. Philip mural is divided into four panels: The Creation; Adam and Eve in the Garden; Noah’s Ark; and the Nativity. This is hardly your typical church mural. It features beautiful bold colors to reflect the diversity of the surrounding neighborhoods. Our mural will have red llamas, blue palm trees, and maybe even pink elephants.
There’s still time for you to get involved. Contact us at St. Philip at 770-435-1497 to find out how.
In Christ,
Stuart Lance
