Urgent Need: Flood Relief Effort

Posted: September 30, 2009

Mt. Bethel’s Disaster Relief, Handy Helpers, and Preschool are working to put together relief efforts. The Preschool is collecting donations for Clarkdale Elementary in West Cobb. They are collecting Gift Cards (ie. Publix, Target, WalMart, Kroger, Lowes, Home Depot, School Box), gently used books to replenish the library and teacher school supplies for their classrooms (they have enough student supplies). Look for buckets labeled with “Flood Relief Donations.”

If you would like to offer your time with the Handy Helpers and Disaster Relief Team or know of someone who needs immediate help, please contact Heather Wood in the Missions Office.

West Cobb Flood Relief Update

Posted: September 29, 2009

Friends,

Our 2nd Mission trip was as rewarding as the 1st. We worked in Cypress Club sub-division off Clay Road very near Sweetwater Creek one of the harder hit areas (pictures attached). Again all the homes were flooded and needed to be cleaned out so that the drying process could begin. This is critical as mold is beginning to grow. As we entered the sub-division I noticed many workers in yellow t-shirts but I did not think much of it initially. Our homeowner lived at the end of the road, we could see the high water marks as we drove back, many were at or above the top of the garage doors. The street was just barely passable due to parked cars and debris and dumpsters placed every 5 or 6 houses (by the City of Austell). By the time we arrived I was noticing yellow shirts everywhere. Before we got unloaded one of them came up to me to see if we needed any help. It seems that Cypress Club sub-division had been selected by the Mormon church (probably due to severity of the damage) for assistance. They were amazing! There before we arrived they were still working when we left. I heard they had around 500 volunteers on the street!

This Thursday 10/1 at 9:00 AM we will be returning to Austell to assist Silvia Gouacide with her home at 5120 Lakeview Ct., Austell 30106. We will meet at the Church at the Lower Roswell Rd. end of the Fairfield Parking Lot between 8:30 and 9:00. We will be car pooling to the work site. I believe we will be doing Demolition and clean out, bring gloves and hand tools. Let me know if you have a wheelbarrow you can bring. We will have lunch on the site and return around 2:00 PM. Please consider helping Thursday with this effort and if you can’t, we will be at it again Saturday after the Habitat Race and hopefully Sunday too.

I hope this pattern of encountering amazing acts of human kindness continues as Mt Bethel continues with its contributions to the relief effort.

I hope to see many of you Thursday morning or this weekend. Please let me know by return e-mail if you will be able to help.

YBIC,
Andy Smith

A Visit to the National Infantry Museum

Posted: September 29, 2009

Bob Babcock led 24 veterans and their spouses from the Veterans Ministry in a caravan on Thursday, Sept 24 to the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning. The museum opened this summer and is a repository of both items and memories for all those who served their country as “grunts.” The grounds included a section of Fort Benning built during WWII which had been preserved and moved to the museum site. The tan buildings with drafty interiors, metal beds aligned side by side, and the latrines in which everything was “bared” generated a laughter which only comes with having survived an experience that you wouldn’t want to do again. The museum was sectioned off into historical eras starting with the American Revolution and walked the visitor through the growth of the American Army into today’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It was a special day and reconnected many of us to a time when we were soldiers once–and young.Old-PostWarriorsInfantry-Museum-EntranceInfantry-Museum-Group

Thank You, Mt. Bethel…

Thank You, Mt. Bethel…

…For not giving up on this senior pastor the past four months!
…For hanging with me and my family during pre-surgery, surgery, dislocation, location, dislocation, location, dislocation, location. . . and finally, another surgery!
…For the delicious meals!
…For your prayers. (Most of you said that you prayed for healing!)
…For your phone calls and words of encouragement.
…For the flowers.
…For the visits in the hospital and home.
…For the finest staff anywhere and their willingness to carry the “load”!
…For your patience and understanding regarding the need “to take it slow.”
…For cautioning my Diane against using a gun, club or knife to take her husband’s life!
…For encouraging Diane to hang in there!
…For your willingness to drive me anywhere!

It’s been a roller-coaster ride and I am thankful to hit a smooth portion of the trip. God has an amazing sense of timing – this week’s sermon is based on the commandment against murder. The past few months have been “murder.” If I’m not here Sunday, perhaps the police could investigate because I know one loving wife who is ready for some relief!

God bless you and I look forward to seeing you.

Randy
