Night Shifts

Posted: July 9, 2009

“Night Shifts” occur in every life, no exception. Usually, the “Night Shift” periods are characterized by a sense of fear, sadness and loneliness. They are dark periods filled with hard realities, a time of quiet desperation. “Night Shifts” frequent everyone’s life, how one handles their “Night Shift” is most important.

Last Thursday night, a young husband and father was taken to the emergency room. His golf cart had blown a tire and flipped over on him. He received a broken neck, four cracked vertebrae. A hush descended over the waiting room as the young wife received the solemn news. For that young couple, life and every dream and hope went out of focus. Perhaps, for the first time, they realized how fragile life really is.

Almost immediately, their thoughts turned from despair to the attitude of gratitude. “Thank God,” they prayed, “it could have been so much worse, our two-year-old son could have been in that golf cart (he frequently rides with his dad). Also, the injury could have been permanent.

Their “Faith Momentum” kicked in! Every devout Christian experiences hilltop moments in their spiritual lives. It is on these hilltops that they have established their faith and fixed their convictions. They have decided in their sanest moments that the love of God is certain, that Jesus Christ is their Savior and friend, and that the Holy Spirit guides, lifts and holds – - – and nothing is ever going to change those realities! God is good . . . Always. The momentum of that certain faith propels us all through the “Night Shifts.”

The important question for each of us is, “How strong is my Faith Momentum?” Those who stand in the dark valley and don’t go down, are able to do so because they decided long before to keep their “Faith Momentum” alive, strong and moving.

That young couple is my son-in-law and daughter. I could not be more proud of the manner in which they are handling their “Night Shift.” Hopefully, prayerfully, Lee’s recovery will be complete.

Their “Night Shift” has been a wake-up call for me. Life is fragile. Now is the time for all of us to establish “Faith Momentum.” Each week witnesses hilltop spiritual experiences at Mt. Bethel. Let’s not allow anything, summer vacation, lesser priorities or laziness to prevent us from adding to our “Faith Momentum.” This week, I invite you to rediscover that the love of God is certain, that Jesus Christ is our Savior and friend, and that the Holy Spirit guides, lifts and holds.

Hope to see you soon,
Randy
