Compassion into Action kids-style is SPLATitude

May 7th, 2008 by susan

Children’s Ministry has adopted a mission that’s easy to remember, fun for kids, and directed to help us be good Disciples. SPLAT stands for Serve, Pray, Love and Teach. We want to be like Jesus.

We have a growing number of opportunities to learn about SPLAT such as SPLAT University on Wednesday nights (during the school year) and Camp SPLAT (summer group learning for elementary kids on Sundays at 11). We teach about SPLAT in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. And during our recent CHARGE retreat, we initiated SPLATitude. We want to inspire our kids, parents, volunteers, and all of Mt. Bethel to have an attitude to Serve, Pray, Love and Teach. At CHARGE, we gave out SPLATitude buttons to kids who displayed SPLATitude. It’s catching on. We’re spreading the word, we’re noticing acts of SPLATitude, and we are learning to make it part of our daily life.

How do you show SPLATitude? Have you seen SPLATitude in others? Tell us about it in a comment below.

A post-CHARGE interview with Thomas (9 years old)

May 6th, 2008 by mickey

A quick look at the recent CHARGE retreat through the eyes of a nine year old:

How was the bus ride?
The buses are great! They were very comfortable! It was loud on the way to camp but it was quiet on the way home. I think it was because we were tired.

How was the cabin?
Some of the tiles on the floor in the cabin were loose but the bathrooms were great!

Did you like the food?
They need more! The girls got to eat first so there wasn’t enough for the boys when it was their turn. They gave us different food. I think the food was healthy and I liked what I had. I even tried Tea (sweet). It was good!

How were the adult counselors?
They were GREAT!

What about worship?
Worship was good - Loud, fun and funny! The juggler was fantastic! So was the magician (Lanny Moody)!

Did you have music?
Yes! the band was awesome and amazing!

Did you take a shower?
No! But I did brush my teeth.

CHARGE!

I am so CHARGED!!! What a great weekend of SPLATitude….the kids really learned about “serving, praying, loving and teaching.”  While having fun in the rain, sleeping in a cabin with no working lights or hot water, my 10 girls and the other adult chaperone were still able to see God in all we did.  Our small group time was enlightening and full of discussion.  The worship service on Saturday night really tied it all together with an alter call and time for prayer with God.  Emotions were high and the Holy Spirit was evident! Then it was time to celebrate with some rocking music!! My neck and shoulders are still sore! I had a great time with “my girls” and truly feel closer to God.  I did, however, enjoy my HOT shower and cozy bed last night…

CHARGE Retreat Updates

May 2nd, 2008 by susan

This weekend (May 2-4), 120 4th and 5th graders and 30+ adult leaders will be at Camp Winfield for CHARGE Retreat. CHARGE stands for Christians Having Awesome Recreation and Godly Encounters. Your prayers are appreciated. The kids will check in at Mt. Bethel Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the Narthex. They’ll load buses and depart by 4:30 p.m. for North Georgia. The weekend will be CHARGED as the kids play games, worship, have Bible study, eat, pray and learn. Luckily, those of us at home can stay connected by following regular updates from the Retreat. Through the miracle of modern technology, anxious parents, devoted prayer warriors, and even curious by watchers can stay informed with TWITTER. These updates will appear on the CHARGE Twitter page, OR if you want to get updates directly, you can get messages sent to your cell phone.

What an awesome opportunity we have to lift up the CHARGE Retreat in prayer - to pray on behalf of these impressionable children who are encountering God in new and transforming ways. And how fortunate we are to be able to be a stay connected and hear about God’s work at CHARGE.
