Mt Bethel has been sending mission teams to Costa Rica since the late 1990s and has sponsored nine teams since 2002. Our ministry partners in Costa Rica are Steve and Karoline Gober, missionaries that have been supported by Mt Bethel for a number of years. Steve is from North Carolina and Karoline is a native Costa Rican. We work closely with and at the direction of the Bishop of the Methodist Church of Costa Rica. He has a vision for what the Methodist Church should be in Costa Rica, and has developed very aggressive strategies and plans for accomplishing those objectives. Two significant components of his strategy are church planting and minister training.
Costa Rica is a beautiful Central America country, with diverse social and economic standards. The economy is strong, driven by tourism and coffee production; but the majority of the people live at or below the poverty level. Resources are scarce for both family livelihood and church growth. Thus our support and short term mission trips have focused on church growth, seminary development, and personal involvement in the spiritual growth of the people.
The most spiritually rewarding experience is seeing the children learn of God’s Love and worshipping with the local parishioners. We have delivered Vacation Bible School to hundreds of children, worshipped two to three times per week with the local congregation, and assisted in the delivery of several Women’s Spiritual Conferences. It is humbling and inspiring to worship with, and observe the faith of the Costa Rican Methodists.
Over the past four years, Mt Bethel has constructed a parsonage, built Sunday School and church fellowship facilities, developed a church recreation area, assisted in the construction of a new church, and provided repairs and upgrades to the Methodist Seminary.
The Costa Rica Short Term Mission trips are an ideal opportunity for families to experience the inspiration of participating in a mission trip.
