The Song of Deborah May they who love you be like the sun when it rises in its strength . . . Judges 5:31
In 1998, just eight years from the fall of the communist dictator in Romania, Lorena Rusovan, a Christian social worker, noticed an eight year old orphaned girl who was unable to talk or socialize normally as a result of horrific physical and sexual abuse. Despite such terrible abuse, the girl was classified as “retarded” and placed in a crowded government orphanage with no physiological therapy. Helpless to take action because there was no adequate governmental or private program available, Lorena envisioned what became Deborah House. It would provide a home where abused, orphaned or abandoned girls could be nurtured in a Christian family setting and receive necessary counseling and education. Deborah House is now a reality thanks in part to short term mission teams and support from Mt. Bethel.
Through the love of an extended Christian family and the love of Christ, these rescued girls now have the best chance to become emotionally and physically healed and prepared to lead a productive life, that before, was only a dream. Deborah House is quite different from the orphanages and institutions that characterized Romania’s communist past. The girls of Deborah House have permanent, live-in house parents, a full-time counselor, and a part-time psychiatrist. Here they have found their new family to love them and support them.
The smiles on the girls’ faces and the gratitude they display, in spite of their past hurts, will touch your heart in a manner you may have never experienced.
We invite you to prayerfully consider joining the Deborah Team. In addition to women and youth, the team needs mature men who can exhibit Christ’s love in contrast to the abusive men in the girls’ past. By joining our team you will be making a lasting difference in young girls’ lives. This is your opportunity to minister grace to young girls who are being rescued from truly abusive and desperate circumstances.
Chris Duncan is the team leader for 2008.
