About:Ira Pittman spent his early childhood in Savannah, Georgia where he spent many happy hours exploring the keyboard at his grandmother’s home. At age six his family transferred to Atlanta. He continued to be inspired by his elementary and high school music teachers and eventually knew he wanted to pursue music as a career. Shortly after turning age twelve, Ira’s father passed away suddenly due to a heart attack. Soon afterwards, Ira, Jr. began his formal study on the piano and soon realized that God had indeed given him a special gift – a sudden hunger to learn to play piano and organ. With only two years of private study, he progressed to advanced levels of keyboard literature and became the assistant pianist/organist at his beloved Midway Presbyterian Church in Decatur. He became senior organist there at age fifteen and took on the additional role of choir director during his senior year in high school.
Ira was honored to be the Student Director and Accompanist for the Avondale High School chorus in DeKalb County. He took full charge of the chorus for two months in the middle of his senior year, due to the sudden departure of one of his mentor directors. Then, a vivacious young lady came to take over at Avondale, freshly graduated from Wesleyan College. Her name was Debbie Vick – soon to become Mrs. Tim Pierce. Ira and Debbie immediately bonded and have maintained a loving mentorship/friendship from that eventful year to the present, still working and supporting each other.
Ira received his Bachelors and Masters in Music Education/Choral Music with Organ minor from Georgia State University. Ira is the proud father of twins, Beth and Brian and, most recently, “Papa” to (as of May 2009) FIVE grandsons.
Mr. Pittman’s teaching career has encompassed Choral Directing positions at Fulton County’s Ridgeview and Roswell High Schools, a short “missionary journey” to two schools in Savannah, and six years directing at Cobb County’s Sprayberry High School. He retired June of 2006 after 30 years of teaching. He has been the accompanist for the Georgia All State Chorus for twenty-two years. He has been guest conductor, choral clinician/adjudicator, and accompanist throughout the state. His choirs have been invited to perform at the Vatican, Italy, France’s Notre Dame Cathedral and Omaha Beach, and all over the east coast. He has conducted and arranged for handbell ensembles and children’s choirs.
Ira has been organist or organist/choirmaster at several Atlanta and Savannah churches. He has been Organist and Music Associate at Mt. Bethel UMC since 1994 (except for a one year “missionary journey” to Savannah), and also conceived and conducts the annual Patriotic Concert.
