How to Live Out Your Identity in Christ (and Help Others Find Theirs)

"A Christ-centered identity always expands outward." — Gaylyn Kelly, Identity: The Lies We Believe
We’ve established that our identity in Christ comes from Him and cannot be taken away. But that doesn’t mean the enemy won’t try to shake it. Our identity also shapes our purpose: to know Jesus and to make Him known.
So how do we live out this purpose, even when under attack? Jesus provides the perfect example.
In Matthew 14:13-21, Jesus learns of John the Baptist’s death. Naturally, He wants to withdraw privately—a very human response to grief. John’s ministry had pointed to Jesus, and his death likely reminded Him that His own time to go to the cross was near.
Yet, a crowd of over five thousand men plus women and children was waiting. Verse 14 says, “When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.”
The disciples, understandably, wanted to send the crowd away. Perhaps they were tired, hungry, or emotionally affected by John’s death—just as we might be when our own pain distracts us. They saw inconvenience; Jesus saw opportunity to display God’s power and glory.
He rebukes their suggestion, gives thanks for the small amount of food the disciples had found for themselves, and performs a miracle: five loaves and two fish become enough to feed the entire crowd with leftovers to spare.
Imagine the enemy’s attacks Jesus must have faced in that moment: “You’re grieving—surely you don’t have to heal them now. You’ve done enough today, why should you have to feed them too? What if they still don’t believe?”
Jesus’ confidence in His identity as the Son of God, empowered by the Spirit, gave Him the strength to act with grace and love instead of frustration.
This story reminds us that as God’s children, we are called to help others discover their identity, even when we are in the middle of our own crises. Our pain doesn’t cancel our purpose. God invites us into the stories of the people around us.
Like Jesus, we don’t wait to feel strong before we serve. We bring what we have—even if it feels small—and trust God to multiply it. A kind word, a prayer, or patience with a struggling friend could be exactly what opens their eyes to God’s love.
Living from your identity in Christ invites a new question: How will people remember Jesus because of me? When our lives overflow with compassion, encouragement, and selfless love, the answer becomes beautifully clear.
You were made to reflect Him. And through you, God continues revealing true identity to a world desperate to find it.
