"I Am the Good Shepherd": Encountering the God Who Loves You

When Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11–15), He’s saying a lot in five words:
- “I Am” is a direct claim to divinity — a reference to YHWH, the name God revealed to Moses from the burning bush. Jesus isn’t just a teacher; He is God.
- “The” reinforces His exclusive claim to be the only way to salvation, freedom, and abundant life (John 10:9–10).
- “Good Shepherd” reveals His character. The Greek word translated as “good” here means pure and right. As Shepherd, He leads perfectly. He doesn’t make mistakes, which means you can trust where He leads.
But Jesus doesn’t stop at identity — He reveals His motivation: love.
His Love is Sacrificial (John 10:11)
His love is voluntary, personal, and cost Him everything. He stepped into our place and carried what we could not. Even if you were the only one who had needed the cross, He still would have come and He still would have paid the price:
His pain for our forgiveness.
His suffering for our good.
His death for our life.
His will for the Father’s.
His Love Stays (John 10:12–13)
Jesus contrasts Himself with the hired hand who runs when danger comes.
The hired hand leaves when it costs something. Jesus stays. He doesn’t abandon you in weakness, wandering, or fear.
Unlike anything else we might put our hope in, Jesus won't disappoint you. Other religious systems, life philosophies, or spiritual leaders may guide you, but they cannot love you perfectly or hold you securely.
You belong to Him. The Shepherd who died for you will not desert from you.
His Love Knows You and Invites You to Know Him (John 10:14)
Encountering the Good Shepherd
Encountering Jesus begins with trust.
Come as you are. Trust what He’s done for you.
You can trust Him because no one loves you like He does — His love is sacrificial, it stays, and it knows you completely.
And as you follow Him, you’ll find He’s not merely leading you to a better life. He’s leading you to become more like Him.
